How The Program Works
The Stamford Hospital program relies on four lifestyle components important to the heart disease reversal process. Each component is an equal part of the whole program.
Nutrition
Participants are instructed by a nutritionist to reduce their dietary fat intake to 10% or lower, incorporating soy protein and plant-based nutrition principles to reduce cholesterol, manage weight and balance the body. Through experiential education, recipes and cooking demonstrations, participants acquire lifelong tools for a heart-healthy diet.
Exercise
An exercise physiologist helps the participant to develop a regular and comprehensive exercise program.
Stress Management
Participants utilize gentle stretching, breathing techniques, relaxation, meditation and imagery.
Group Support
Group support provides a key component to helping the participant identify their blocks to making change and how to overcome them. Patients work individually and with their group.
Mentoring
Mentoring by former participants is a key component of helping individuals through the program.
Each participant commits to:
- 96 hours of class time
- Diet modification to 10% fat, vegetarian based, no caffeine
- Accumulating 3 hours of exercise per week
- Developing a daily stress management practice using yoga and relaxation techniques
- Participating in group support and learning healthy ways to communicate at home work and in the community.
- Not smoked for the past two months
